From Our President & CEO | cdc monthly - July 2018

Updated: Apr 25, 2019

We often think of July as a traditionally "slow time" at work. Colleagues take vacation, kids are home from school, etc. There's even a term for this perceived deceleration in our normally fast-paced work rhythm: "Summer Slowdown."

While the debate rages on, we at CDC have just turned the page on one of our busiest months in recent memory! It was so busy, we're even sending out this e-news a little later than usual....

July got off to a running start with a ceremony celebrating new graduates of our workforce development partnership with Rebuilding Together Tampa Bay and Painters On Demand.

In all, 12 men and women have been able to launch professional painting careers so far as a result of our collective efforts to increase the number of certified painters in our community.

Our Workforce Development Center team kept the momentum going by hosting a hiring fair for 70 job seekers and a dozen local employers the very next day!

Meanwhile, CDC's Youth Success Center team stayed just a busy as their Workforce counterparts by facilitating a dynamic, enriching summer experience for 13-17 year olds that's so much more than a traditional summer day camp. Through guest speakers, field trips, workshops and community service, this year's Summer Success students have continued to learn and grow this summer and are prepared for the new school year to come.

Speaking of success, I'd like to recognize our Sr. Youth Manager, Ms. Lafe Thomas, who recently completed The University of Tampa's Nonprofit Management Certificate through the John H. Sykes College of Business.

Lafe: we're so proud of you, and grateful to have you as part of CDC's leadership team. Congratulations!

And in case you thought our Homeownership and Real Estate Development teams were taking it easy during the warm, summer months--think again! In fact, July offered us to opportunity to bring on two new staff members to meet the ever-expanding work of these two teams. Please join me in welcoming Roger Rayburn as a new Homeownership Advisor, as well as Arafat Kanaan as our first Construction Manager for Real Estate Development.

So, as you peruse this edition of CDC Monthly, please be sure to read more about:

  • How our Homeownership Center is playing a part in helping Tampa's ranking as the #1 large city in the nation for new home buyers; and

  • Why our Vice President of Real Estate Development is so passionate about continuing to develop innovative solutions for our region's affordable housing challenges.

If you enjoy what you read, please share it with family, friends, co-workers and neighbors who might enjoy it as well. I also hope you'll consider supporting CDC's mission by making a gift today -or- at our Community Development Champions Luncheon on October 9th.

May the month of August be full of new opportunities and positive momentum for you and your family. As always, thank you for being a special part of the CDC of Tampa community!
