From Our President & CEO | cdc monthly - April 2018

As you may know, April is National Financial Capability Month (formerly known as Financial Literacy Month).

Financial capability, as defined by our

friends at Prosperity Now, is "...the set of tools and strategies individuals can use to grow their savings and insulate themselves from destabilizing life events and economic shocks."

As local individuals and families grow

their savings over time, they unlock new opportunities to build financial assets--homeownership, education, entrepreneurship, etc. that can lead to more prosperous futures and vibrant communities for all of us to call home. See NeighborWorks America's overview of financial capability on Youtube.

At CDC, our mission is all about creating economic opportunities for Tampa's people and communities--not just during April's 30 days--but EVERY day! And building financial capability is absolutely at the heart of what we do. But we definitely don't do it alone....

That's why I'm glad that April is also a special time to recognize volunteerism, particularly here in the Sunshine State, where April is Florida Volunteer Month.

The intersection of these two, month-long celebrations result in some incredible partnerships that positively benefit our customers all year round. These include:

  • CDC's engagement as a year-round Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site, through support from the Internal Revenue Service and United Way Suncoast, and because of dedicated volunteers from Suncoast Credit Union, University of Tampa and the National Association of Black Accountants - Tampa Bay Professional Chapter, BB&T, Fifth Third Bank and more.

  • Financial Management Classes hosted by CDC's Homeownership Center, and presented by skilled volunteers from GTE, Hancock Whitney, Regions, Tampa Bay Federal Credit Union, Wells Fargo and Valley National, among others. This four-part course emphasizes healthy banking habits, budgeting, deciphering credit, and understanding the lending process; these sessions lay the foundation for participants to enroll in one-to-one financial coaching, where they build customized action plans to pave the way to meet their financial goals.

Learn more about our financial capability efforts and more in this edition of CDC Monthly. If you are informed and inspired by what you read, then I hope that you'll share our e-news with others you think will be edified as well.

May the next month be full of new opportunities for you and your family. And, as always, thank you for being a special part of our CDC of Tampa community!
