CDC of Tampa's VITA Site Brings Over $285,000 in Tax Refunds to Hillsborough Families | cdc mont
On February 6, 2018 CDC of Tampa once again opened its doors to Hillsborough County families interested in having their federal taxes prepared for FREE!
And for the third straight tax filing season, more than 200 families came to CDC of Tampa to take advantage of our IRS-certified volunteers--who prepared and filed their federal tax returns free of charge between February 6th and April 11th.
“We are proud to know that so many families continue to entrust us to complete their federal tax returns year,” said Stephen Ponzillo, Director of Communications & Partnerships, and the Co-Site Coordinator for this year’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program at CDC of Tampa.
Returns prepared by CDC of Tampa’s VITA site yielded more than $285,000 in tax refunds to local families. $137,000 (48% of the total amount refunded) was the result of the Earned Income Credit and/or Additional Child Tax Credit--refundable tax credits for low- to moderate-income working individuals and couples with children.
CDC of Tampa's VITA site was just one of 34 free tax sites throughout the greater Tampa Bay region supported by the Internal Revenue Service and United Way Suncoast. All told, more than 10,700 returns were prepared and filed by local VITA volunteers this tax season!
VITA creates an incredible financial benefit for people in our community, but the true level of its impact simply cannot be measured in dollars and sense. As Ponzillo commented, “To see the faces of hard working families who are struggling to make ends meet when they find out they are going to receive a tax refund that can help them pay off bills or allow them to save for their child's future, is absolutely priceless.”
Ponzillo added, "We couldn't be more grateful to our corporate and community volunteers who drive this entire program. First and foremost, we we're blessed to have a returning volunteer--Christina Hill--step up to become our Co-site Coordinator this season. Special recognition also goes to our volunteers from Suncoast Credit Union, University of Tampa and the National Association of Black Accountants - Tampa Bay Professional Chapter. Without them, we simply couldn't impact families on nearly the same scale. We are so grateful for each of our VITA volunteers!"
